| Submarine Unit A |
Initially the 4th Submarine Squadron was based at Camranh Bay (French Indo-China),
supporting the Southern Force against Malaya and Sumatra, as well operating in the Bangka Strait.
Assigned to Submarine Unit A as of 18.02.1942.
Moved to Staring Bay (off Kendari, Celebes) late February 1942.
At first, the 6th Submarine Squadron was based at Davao (Mendado, Philippine Islands);
it too moved to Staring Bay late February 1942. |
| Submarine Unit B |
Initially based at Camranh Bay (French Indo-China),
the 5th Submarine Squadron moved to Penang, Sumatra (Netherlands East Indies)
late January 1942. Deployed in Bay of Bengal. Operational area in the Indian Ocean west of 106° longitude, with the
mission of destroying Allied shipping passing through the Malacca Strait and in the Indian Ocean. |
| Submarine Unit C |
After operating in Hawaiian waters until early January 1942, the seven submarines had returned
to Yokosuka, Japan (via Kwajalein) for repairs.
So the 2nd Submarine Squadron (duly redesignated Group C) did not arrive at Staring Bay (off Kendari, Celebes)
until mid-February 1942. Deployed in waters south of Java. |
